No Skeletons Allowed

My son asked me to draw a scary skeleton... (That's my drawing in the purple). So I did. And he embellished it a bit.

Then I found it taped up here. By the front door. He added a big red "X" and the words "No".
He cracks me up. Just so you know, you'll need to leave your skeleton at the door. They are not allowed inside. :)

A Little Pampering... from the best Mom

My Mom and little sister came to visit last Saturday.
First she took my Ella out for some much needed grandma time.

And after that gave me a choice of colors...

for a much needed pedicure.

My little sister kept Hudson busy with water balloons and a game of Candy Land.

My mom also brought cake for Jason's birthday
and orange pop which we all enjoyed very much.

Thank you Mom (and Erika)!!!
 You're the best!

Brown Paper Packages...

No matter how much I love facebook and blogging to keep in touch with friends and family, I really love snail mail best. I got a package in the mail from my good friend and fellow blogger, Shelly from I didn't sign up for this. She made my kiddos some St. Patrick's Day shirts. Aren't they so adorable? I love them. The kids wore them to church last night and got soooo many compliments!

Stuffy Noses

Our family has some stuffy noses. I know a humidifier would help, but I threw ours out over a year ago. I've owned a few and they either have made everything a soggy mess around them or grew mold at lightening speed. Anyone have a humidifier that they love? Do you suggest cool mist or warm mist? I'd love to hear from you.

Time Out

A friend of mine from college just wrote a very humorous and inspiring
blog post. It really challenged me to take a time out and re-visit my
priorities. Read her post over at Mel's Variety Pack, I promise you won't
regret it.

Charged with Improper Use of Scissors

My Little Paper Cutter...just cutting away.
I snapped this picture just moments before she came to me holding this piece of hair.

Apparently, she ran out of paper and snipped her hair. Thankfully, it was just a tiny bit. I'm just afraid of what could happen- Next time.

I Won!

I entered a little give away at Lille-rusus ...and I WON!

Now, just so you know, I never win anything. I was so completely excited. But, I was even more delighted yesterday when I received the package in the mail. The envelope was tied with cute little red twine and inside the blouse was wrapped beautifully in blue wrapping and tied with that cute red twine. It was so much fun. My daughter LOVES the blouse. She is especially fond of the cute gingham pocket. She says she will be keeping her chapstick in there. A BIG thank you to Ulla for such a wonderful give away.

Summer Recipe Challenge

Pimp that Rocking Chair

My Rocking Chair -Before

I have been wanting to recover my rocking chair for a long time. It's seen 3 years of use and abuse and looks terrible.
Right now the chair resides in my almost 2 year old son's room. So this morning, I went in search of a tutorial to help give me
some guidance.
I found this post at Creative Little Daisy. Her chair looks
fantastic! I am so excited to find some fabric and get going on this new project.
I'll post pics whenever I get started. Here's the link-

My New Sand Dollar Print Headband

Just got done making this cute little headband with my new lovely lavendar and aqua sand dollar print I got at JoAnn's. It's by Heidi Grace. I think it's super cute. I love to wear headbands in the summer. I wear my hair in a messy ponytail almost everyday in this hot weather and having a cute headband, makes me feel less schlumpy.
I saw this cute reversible headband browsing through A Feathered Nest's older posts and loved it. I've been making very simple rectangle headbands for my daughter and headbands for etsy shop and then embellishing them. But this one, I made for me. :) You can find the pattern and instructions over at Foofangle.
One tip I read on A Feathered Nests post in the comments was to: Sew the elastic in on one end. Next attach a safety pin to the other side of elastic. Then use the safety pin to move the elastic up towards the opening and pull it though to make turning it inside out a little easier.
Of course I read that after I finished making mine. Next time I'll give that a try

SEW much Fun!! What is better than Crafting with a Friend?!

Hooray for Friends...who travel 3 hours to come visit!!
The girls riding trikes in the backyard.
*You can buy a dress just like Em's in Shelly's Etsy store- Ribbon Candy.

Here's the girls with their "Pink Giraffe" and "Orange Lion" masks we made together.

I had an excellent time Thursday and Friday with my friend Shelly (her blog is "I didn't sign up for this" ) and her two kiddos. We've been friends since High School, but have lived in different states for many years now. It's a real treat to get to spend time with her. She's so creative and fun.  There are some pictures from High School where we made ourselves some tutus, one Friday night because we were bored. I'd post those pictures if it wasn't so embarrassing...for us both. :) Coincidentally, there aren't any pics of us together from this visit...ok, I lied there's one, but I pinky swore I wouldn't post it anywhere because we both look terrible. But I digress, as I was saying, She's so creative.
She brought everything we needed to make fun animal masks for the kids and to make felt food for the girls.

Getting ready for bed. Ella was so excited to share her "princess robe" with Emma. They had so much fun playing together. It was hard to settle down and go to bed.

We have such an easy friendship. We talk on the phone every weekday around 3 or 4 times a day. Adding up to we guess at around 2-3 hours of talking a day. We don't talk on the phone on the weekends, mainly because our husbands would go nuts. Its so nice because I know she understands me. She knows all my faults and loves me anyway (and vice versa). Friendship like that is hard to come by. I don't have to hide the fact that I have a pile of laundry overflowing my basket sitting on the washer. I didn't get the kitchen floor scrubbed spotless before she came and that was ok. We laughed, we talked, we watched our kiddos play. (Which, they did so well. Usually our girls tend to either ignore one another or have a hard time sharing. This visit they had SO much fun together. Which just proves that they are indeed growing up into little girls. We won't talk about the last hour or so when then my daughter had some major "No Sharing" melt downs... and subsequent time-outs.)

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing Ella singing..."Jesus loves me".
Emma is playing the part of the paparazzi in this pic. :)

ANYWAY- We also got to craft together. Which we do vicariously through email pictures, but it was so nice to work on a project together in real time. Usually, I'm uploading photos and asking, "Now if you were me, what would you do here?" OR "What else do I need to add to this?"

We made some super cute FELT FOOD. So much FUN!!!
We made a stack of 3 pancakes, syrup, butter, and bacon. We also made 2 slices of bread, lettuce, turkey lunch meat, cheddar cheese slice, and a Swiss cheese slice- For each of our girls.

What is super funny is that both our girls thought the little pats of butter on the pancakes were cheese. Made us laugh. We don't eat cheese on our pancakes, gross!

Ella also thought that the bacon was "mistake" (more commonly known as steak).

I will warn you that the felt food making can be addictive. I'm already trying to think of what else would be fun to make. We tried to make everything easy and quick. We sewed almost everything with my machine. And we didn't bother turning things or making things double layered. The point here was to do something fun together and fun for the girls to play with. We weren't worried about perfection. The bread and pancakes we left the seams exposed and we thought it added to the fun texture of the food. We did stuff the pancakes and bread with a layer of batting. But the PB & J and all the cheese, lunch meat, and syrup were just a single layer of felt.

Yummy sandwiches!

making a PB & J

These last two pics are from today. Ella sitting down at her table for some "lunch".

Wish I would have gotten pics of the girls playing with their felt food together.
(Her "tablecloth" is a baby doll blanket that my great-grandmother made for my mom.
I LOVE it so much. Its one of my favorite things that has been passed down to me.)

Thanks Shelly for coming to visit. I had a blast. We'll have to get together again soon!! Talk to you on Monday. :)

Oh, hope everyone has a very Happy Mother's Day!!!

Earth Day

taken in our backyard today

Well, it's Earth Day. At first, I was feeling a bit rebellious about it. I even had started a post about how so many people are WAY into the earth and being green, and how I think it's become its own little religion.  I think it is important for us to take care of our earth and be good stewards of what God has given us. I just see some take it to an extreme. There has to balance in our lives.

So anyway,  I decided to try to take a more positive approach. I talked to Ella (my 3 year old) about Earth day.  We talked about how God made the world and we sang "He's got the whole world in his Hands." One of her favorites. She especially  loves the verse about how he has the little tiny babies. She's pretty cute singing it.

... and we read one of my favorite Golden Books

Here's an Excerpt from

My Little Golden Book About God

By Jane Werner Watson

Illustrated by Eloise Wilkin (who is my favorite illustrator)

Think of our earth, spinning in space

So that now, for a a day of play and work

we face the sunlight, then we turn away-

to the still, soft darkness for rest and sleep.

This, too, is God’s doing.

 For GOD IS GOOD

God gives us everything we need-

Shelter from cold and wind and rain,

Clothes to wear and food to eat.

God gives us flowers, the songs of birds,

The laughter of brooks, the deep song of the sea.

He sends the sunshine to make things grow,

Sends in its turn the needed rain.

God makes us grow too, with minds and eyes

To look about our wonderful world,

To see its beauty, to feel its might.

Lastly,  while taking pictures in our backyard today, I took a picture of another one of God's Creations...

This is Pixie, our Boston Terrier. She's super crazy, but very lovable.

Victoria's Secret has Nursing Bras?!

What?! When did Victoria's Secret get Nursing Bras? And where was I? I've always said, "Oh I just wish Victoria's Secret would get nursing bras."  Um... so they do have them now. And of course, I'm not nursing anymore. So too little, too late. But for the next kiddo, that's the first nursing bra I will try. Who knew?

* Just as a side note, the woman modeling the nursing bra, doesn't appear to have the boobies or body of a woman who has had babies. If she has, then good for her, but her bosoms appear a little too perky and round. I'm just sayin'....

BLOGGERS UNITE - WEDNESDAY 28 JANUARY - CPSIA BLOG-IN

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.
Article from the American Library Association http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=1322

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

If you think this is exaggerating, here is a recent article from Forbes
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/16/cpsia-safety-toys-oped-cx_wo_0116olson.html

And for those of you prepared to be stupefied and boggled, The New Law

Did you know? If this upsets or alarms you, please react.

"New" Books

Yesterday, my good husband took our daughter to the used book store down the street. It's a wonderful place. I was sad to have to stay home with our little boy, who has been feeling pretty sickly lately. However, they came home with some treasures!
They found a stack of Golden Books. I just love old Golden Books! And what makes an old golden book even better...being illustrated by Eloise Wilkin. Her illustrations are the best. She draws children that you just want to scoop up in your arms and smooch their sweet chubby cheeks.
